2022 Commercial Electric Vehicle Adoption Report

Fleet acceptance is growing, but EBM’s 2022 survey finds availability, cost, and charging are still major barriers to wide adoption on commercial electric vehicles.

Following up on its benchmark 2021 survey, a new Endeavor Business Intelligence report documents the evolving fleet expectations for commercial electric vehicle adoption in the U.S.

A major shift to electric automotive powertrains is a very good bet at this point, but when will that transformation cross over to the mainstream? The commercial electric vehicle (CEV) segment of that market is going to be a key element in such a transformation. That makes the fleet adoption rate of CEVs a valuable barometer of the technology’s long-term viability as a practical automotive powertrain for the future.

2022 Fleet Survey Takeaways

  • 13.8% of respondents indicated having 50 or more BEVs
  • 13% of fleets have near-term plans to pilot test CEVs or adopt them on a limited scale.
  • Early adoption of commercial electric vehicles by U.S. fleets has doubled since the 2021 survey

Like the initial CEV survey conducted by the Endeavor Commercial Vehicle Group in 2021, the 2022 survey is based on a large sample of fleets mirroring the overall U.S. trucking industry. Ranging in size from fewer than 10 trucks to over 1,000, it includes for-hire carriers and private fleets as well as those with vocational applications and government operations. Compared to the original survey findings, the new 26-page report finds significant changes in fleet CEV attitudes and adoption activities, bringing a bit more clarity to a realistic timetable for broader deployment of electric vehicle technology in the various truck markets. It also highlights fleet perception of major barriers to CEV adoption over the next five years.
